Listen and Do
✓ The Not Shit PromiseWritten by me. No AI.You over-complicate learning new skills.
You need 2 things to get better at anything.
- Listen.
- Do.Listening takes many forms. You learn, read, watch, get shown something, or just listen.
Doing is practicing, training, doing. Some people call it executing. I call it getting shit done.
Most people don’t do doing enough. We like to spend time learning, because learning gives us that quick dopamine hit. It gives us the short-term pat on the back.
Learning without application is just data acquisition. It won’t help you. Applying the data is the only useful thing.
I learned this quickly when I took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in February. I got mega excited about learning something new, as I always do when I start learning new stuff.
I started reading loads of books, watching YouTube videos. I got sucked into data acquisition.
Then I stopped, and just started doing more.
I went to more classes a week. I practiced the things I already knew more often. I trained and drilled more than I acquired new knowledge, and I got better. Very quickly.
The fundamentals are important to learn before you learn anything else, then they’re important to apply.
Over, and over, and over.
Listen and do.
